Massachusetts Ranked the BEST State for Children!
The Annie E. Casey Foundation has released it's 2014 KIDS COUNT Data Book, naming Massachusetts the overall best state for children!
The Casey Foundation has been tracking trends in the prosperity of our children since 1990, when it published it's first Data Book. The organization compiles data from 16 key child-level indictors in the following categories:
- Economic Well-Being
- Education
- Health
- Family & Community
Massachusetts tops the overall list for several key reasons, including achieving the highest education ratings in the country. Our health rankings are second in the nation, because only 1% of children in Massachusetts are uninsured and we've reduced the numbers of low-birthweight babies, teens who abuse alcohol and drugs, and child deaths. Massachussetts ties New Hampshire for the lowest teen birth rates in the US, and several other factors that indicate strong family and economic well-being in the Commonwealth.
"With the right investments, we can provide all families and children with the opportunity to reach their full potential and, in the process, strengthen both our economy and our nation."
Although there is still room for improvement in all categories, the report also highlights many policies and practices that have improved child health and development across the country over the last 25 years. Review the state rankings here, or read the complete Data Book here.
