What is Mold? Part I: The Silent Infectant

Mold isn’t just white fuzzies growing on old bread in the cupboard; it can be a serious and damaging problem for homeowners. Being aware of what it is and what adverse effects it can have on one’s health is important. Read on to find out more!

What is mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that grows naturally in the environment thriving on moisture and nutrients. Mold spores, similar to microscopic seeds, can be found anywhere suitable living conditions exist. This means that mold can grow anywhere from couches to ceiling tiles, making mold growth something difficult to deter. Mold is very much a damaging fungus, so its continued growth should be discouraged and curbed as soon as detected.

Are there health concerns associated with mold?

How mold affects a person can vary greatly depending on multiple factors, including the amount of mold present in the environment and the person themselves. Symptoms of mold growth when manifested in a human could include wheezing, coughing, nasal and throat conditions. Those who have already existing respiratory conditions such as asthma may notice their condition worsen, as well as those with mold allergies or sensitivities.

There are certain parties who run a greater risk for being negatively affected by the presence of mold, such as infants, elderly people, and children, as well as those with weakened immune systems, such as HIV positive people, chemotherapy patients, or organ transplant recipients, just to name a few.

Anyone, despite heightened risk or otherwise, should consult a medical professional if there is concern about mold affecting one’s health.

Are there different types of mold, and are some more dangerous than others?

Yes, there are different types of mold. Some can even produce toxic compounds called mycotoxins, which can prove dangerous or fatal is exposure is continued or ingested. Most molds can produce potentially harmful substances, so any mold growth should be removed without hesitation, no matter the type or severity.

Removing mold can be tricky, but there are things you can do to eliminate and prevent mold recurrence. Check out Part II for more information!
